Africa > Liberia
Liberia is one of West Africa's least-visited countries, and also one of the most rewarding for travelers willing to deal with poor infrastructure and limited tourist facilities. It has extraordinary tropical forest, good surfing beaches, warm and direct people, and a history unlike anywhere else on the continent.
Founded in 1822 as a settlement for freed American slaves and free Black people repatriated from the United States, Liberia was never formally colonized by a European power. It declared independence in 1847 — the first republic in Africa. The Americo-Liberians, as the settlers' descendants became known, dominated political and economic life for over a century, creating a divided society that eventually fractured. Two civil wars between 1989 and 2003 killed an estimated 250,000 people and shattered the country's infrastructure. Recovery has been slow but real. In 2006, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf became the first woman elected head of state in Africa.
The coastline is long and largely undeveloped, running from the Sierra Leone border in the northwest to Côte d'Ivoire in the southeast. Robertsport, near the Sierra Leone border, draws surfers for its reliable Atlantic swells. Buchanan, the second city, has quiet beaches and a port. Inland, the country rises through rolling hills and dense forest. Sapo National Park in the southeast is the jewel — a huge tract of primary rainforest harboring pygmy hippos, forest elephants, and chimpanzees. Getting there is an expedition in itself.
Monrovia is the capital, a sprawling coastal city with a chaotic, energetic character. It's the base for most travelers and the only place with a reasonable range of accommodation and services. From here, most of the country's highlights are reachable on day trips or short overnight journeys.
Liberia is not an easy destination. Roads outside Monrovia are rough, the rainy season (May–October) makes many routes impassable, and services are basic. But for the traveler who finds that kind of challenge inviting rather than discouraging, it delivers something genuinely rare.
