The central market in Gbarnga is the busiest in the Liberian interior — a dense sprawl of stalls along the main road and spilling into the side streets. Vendors come in from the surrounding Kpelle and Mano villages with cassava, plantains, palm oil, smoked fish, peanuts and the produce of the rubber and coffee plantations.
Weekly market day pulls in the largest crowds and the widest selection. Beyond food, you will find cheap Chinese imports, second-hand clothing, fabrics, electronics and a row of cookware sellers. It is the right place to taste country chop, kala (fried dough balls), and other Liberian street food.
