Kpatawee Waterfall

Kpatawee Falls is a three-tier cascade tucked into the forest about 50 km west of Gbarnga, near the village of the same name in Suakoko District. The water tumbles in three distinct steps through a rocky gorge, with the lower pool deep and clear enough for swimming — and it is the swim, much more than the view, that makes the trip worth taking.

Getting there is the usual Liberian expedition: shared taxi or motorbike from Gbarnga down a deteriorating dirt road, with the final stretch on foot through the village to the falls. A small entrance fee is charged at the village, and local guides will show you the path. Weekends bring small groups of Liberian visitors out from Monrovia; midweek you may have it to yourself. Bring water and food — there are no facilities at the falls.

A story
The falls have long been a sacred site for the local Kpelle people, who hold periodic ceremonies in the surrounding forest. During the civil war the area was largely cut off, and the falls re-emerged into popular knowledge only after 2003.
