Phebe Hospital sits next to Cuttington University on the road east of Gbarnga. Founded by the American Lutheran mission in 1921, it has been one of the most important medical institutions in the Liberian interior for over a century, training generations of nurses and serving as a referral hospital for Bong County and beyond.
It is a working hospital and not a tourist sight, but the campus is open and the chapel and older mission buildings are interesting in their own right. During the civil war Phebe was repeatedly looted and damaged; the steady reconstruction since 2003 is a quiet success story.
