The Nimba National Forest covers a stretch of the lower slopes and foothills of the Nimba mountains in northern Nimba County, protecting one of the larger remnants of Upper Guinea rainforest in the country. It is contiguous with the broader Mount Nimba protected-area complex and is home to a remarkable concentration of West African forest species: chimpanzees, several species of monkeys, pygmy hippopotamus in the wetter drainages, forest elephants (rare), duikers, and an exceptional bird list.
Tourist infrastructure is minimal — there is no established visitor centre or trail system, and access depends on hiring local guides through the Forestry Development Authority office in Yekepa or Sanniquellie. For serious nature travellers willing to organise their own visit, the rewards are real — this is genuine, large-tract West African forest with intact wildlife. For everyone else, a short walk along the forest edge from one of the nearby villages still gives a good sense of the scale.
