Al Qatrun is about 300 km south of Sebha along the main desert road through the Fezzan. There is no public transport in the conventional sense on this route.
By road from Sebha — The road south from Sebha is paved for much of its length but crosses remote desert terrain. A 4WD vehicle is essential, as is carrying enough fuel, water, and food for the journey — services between Sebha and Al Qatrun are sparse. In better times this was a standard overland route for travellers heading south toward Niger; a fill-up in Sebha, a fuel stop in Al Qatrun, and onward to the border.
Current security situation — As of the early 2020s, travel in this region is extremely dangerous. The road south through the Fezzan passes through territory affected by armed conflict, and the Libya-Niger-Chad triangle is one of the main corridors for arms and people smuggling in the Sahara. The security situation is volatile and changes quickly. Do not attempt this journey without current, specific intelligence from people who know the ground — a general travel advisory will not be sufficient. Specialist desert travel operators with active contacts in the region are the only reliable source of up-to-date information.
The Niger consulate that formerly facilitated border crossings for overland travellers may no longer be functioning in its historic capacity. Verify before you travel.
