West Basilica

The West Basilica is one of Apollonia's most important Byzantine remains. It was built against the western stretch of the city wall and included a three-aisled church, a projecting apse, a baptistery, an atrium and several associated rooms.

Look for the way the Christian complex borrows the ancient city's defensive edge. Apollonia is especially good for seeing how a classical port became a late antique town before fading after the Arab conquest.

A story
The west basilica was not a single neat church but a large complex pressed against the inner city wall. The baptistery and added rooms show how late antique Apollonia kept reusing the bones of the older city.
