West Gate and City Wall

The West Gate marks one of the clearest surviving points in Apollonia's city wall. The gate was refurbished in Byzantine times, when a building was added around it, so it works as a compact lesson in the site's long reuse.

It is worth stopping here before wandering the churches, because the wall helps orient the whole site. Apollonia was a port, but it was also a fortified town, squeezed between coastal exposure and the inland road to Cyrene.
