Ghat Fort

The ruined fort above Ghat is the town's best viewpoint, lifting you just high enough to understand the oasis geography. The palms, the old settlement, and the desert beyond line up in a way no street-level walk can quite explain.

The structure itself has suffered from neglect and conflict, so do not expect a polished monument. Come for the position, the sense of frontier history, and the late-afternoon light on the surrounding sand and stone.

Forts in the Sahara were rarely just military statements. They controlled water, customs, and the movement of caravans, which made them as much about taxation and authority as defence.
