Old Town of Ghat

The old town of Ghat is a compact oasis settlement of mud-brick walls, shaded lanes, and palm-fringed edges. Much of it is weathered and partly ruined, but that is part of the atmosphere: this is a Sahara town that shows its age honestly.

Walk slowly and look for the small practical details - thick walls against heat, narrow passages against sun, and courtyards built for privacy. A local guide is useful both for orientation and for understanding which parts are safe or appropriate to enter.

A story
Ghat's importance came from its position rather than its size. Caravans moving between the central Sahara, Fezzan, and the Mediterranean coast could water here before taking on some of the hardest stretches of the desert.
