Tadrart Acacus

Rock-art mountains east of Ghat, with paintings and engravings from a wetter Sahara

The Tadrart Acacus is the reason many travellers know Ghat's name. This broken desert mountain range east of town is a UNESCO-listed rock-art landscape, with paintings and engravings spread through shelters, cliffs, and narrow wadis.

The scenery is powerful even before you see the art: dark sandstone, natural arches, isolated towers, and sand-filled corridors that change colour through the day. Visits require a specialist local guide and a desert vehicle. The sites are fragile and have suffered vandalism, so respectful behaviour is not just etiquette here; it is preservation.

A story
The Acacus rock art is startling because it shows animals and human scenes that do not fit the desert you see today. Cattle, giraffes, hunters, and dancers appear on stone walls where there is now little but wind, gravel, and heat. The paintings are a visual climate record as much as an archaeological treasure.
