Rebiana Sand Sea

Vast dune field stretching north of Kufra toward the Libyan interior

The Rebiana Sand Sea (Erg Rebiana) stretches north and west of Kufra — an enormous field of dunes covering tens of thousands of square kilometres. It is one of the largest ergs in the Sahara, and reaching its edge from the Kufra oasis gives a visceral sense of the isolation that defined life here for centuries. Caravans crossing the Sahara navigated around or through these dunes using stars, wind, and accumulated desert knowledge.

For any traveller who reaches Kufra, venturing out to the dunes is the primary draw beyond the oasis itself. The colours at dawn and dusk — ochre, red, and shadow — are extraordinary. This is technical desert, not a day hike: go with a local guide, carry water well beyond what you think you need, and treat the navigation seriously.
