The Kufra oasis complex consists of several interconnected oases — Tazerbo, Rebiana, and Kufra proper — sitting atop the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer. The date palm groves here have sustained life for centuries, fed by water drawn from wells that tap into this enormous underground reserve. The landscape around the oasis is a dramatic contrast: dunes and gravel plains in every direction, then suddenly the green of irrigated agriculture.
The town of Al-Jawf is the largest settlement in the Kufra district, the administrative centre, and where most of the population lives. It is a functioning Libyan town with a market, not a preserved heritage site — but the setting, with open desert pushing in from every side, is striking in a way that few inhabited places can match.
