Necropolis of Cyrene

The necropolis of Cyrene spreads beyond the city in a long zone of tombs cut into the slopes and cliffs. It is one of the largest ancient burial landscapes in the region, and it gives a different view of the city: not public monuments, but generations of families marking status, memory, and belief.

Many tombs are weathered or damaged, and access may vary. Go with a guide who knows which areas are appropriate to visit, and resist the temptation to climb into fragile chambers.
