Anja Community Reserve

Community-run reserve famous for close views of ring-tailed lemurs

Anja Community Reserve sits about 13 km south of Ambalavao, where forest, boulders, and granite cliffs create a pocket of habitat beside the RN7. It is famous for ring-tailed lemurs, which are often seen at close range without the long search required in larger parks.

Visits are guided, and the trails can be tailored from easy circuits to steeper climbs onto the rocks. The reserve is small, but the combination of lemurs, views, caves, and community guiding makes it one of the most rewarding short stops in Madagascar.

A story
Anja was created by local residents in 2001 to protect a small but important patch of forest and earn income from guiding. It is now often cited as one of Madagascar's strongest examples of community-managed conservation.
