Antaimoro Paper Workshop

Handmade bark paper decorated with pressed flowers

Ambalavao's paper workshops make Antaimoro paper from bark fibre, pressing flowers, leaves, and stems into the sheets while they are still wet. The process is simple to watch and surprisingly delicate: pulp, frame, water, petals, sun.

Finished cards, lampshades, and sheets are sold on site. They are light, packable souvenirs and a better buy than many mass-produced crafts because you can see the work that went into them.

A story
Antaimoro paper is associated with communities of south-eastern Madagascar who preserved Arabic-script manuscripts on handmade paper. Modern workshops around Ambalavao have turned that tradition into a craft travellers can watch and carry home.
