Vezo Village and Fishing Beach

The Vezo are Madagascar's coastal fishing people, and Anakao is one of their traditional villages. Their identity is defined not by ethnicity but by way of life — the Vezo are whoever lives on the sea, and their skill with outrigger pirogues is remarkable. They navigate by the stars and the currents, reading conditions that are invisible to outsiders.

The beach at Anakao is the best place to watch this culture at work. The pirogues come in with the morning catch — octopus, reef fish, lobster — and buyers from the village gather at the water's edge. Women dry and salt some of the catch on the beach. The wooden boats are pulled up on the sand and repaired between trips. It is not a performance; it is daily life, and you are welcome to watch and photograph if you do so respectfully.
