Avenue of the Baobabs

Madagascar's famous dirt road lined with giant Grandidier's baobabs

The Avenue of the Baobabs is the image most travellers carry away from western Madagascar: a red dirt road, rice fields, and a line of massive Grandidier's baobabs rising like towers from the flat land. Some of the trees are centuries old, and their swollen trunks look most unreal in the last hour before sunset.

Come late in the afternoon, but do not expect solitude; this is Morondava's headline excursion and photographers gather here every evening. The scene still earns its fame. Combine it with the nearby Sacred Baobab or Baobabs in Love if you have a driver for the half-day.
