Blantyre is the main entry point for southern Malawi and is reasonably well connected by regional standards.
By air. Chileka International Airport (BLZ) is about 15 km north of the city centre. It handles flights from Johannesburg, Nairobi, and a handful of other African hubs. Minibuses and taxis connect the airport to town; the taxi ride takes around 30 minutes depending on traffic.
By bus. Long-distance coaches run from Lilongwe (roughly 3–4 hours), Mzuzu in the north, and cross-border services from Harare, Lusaka, and Dar es Salaam. AXA, Intercape, and local operators all serve the Blantyre bus depot in Limbe. Shared minibuses are cheaper and more frequent but considerably less comfortable.
By road from the south. The main road north from Mozambique crosses at Mwanza and is in reasonable condition. Coming from Zimbabwe via Tete, the road is longer but passable.
Getting into town from the bus depot. The main long-distance bus terminal is in Limbe, about 5 km east of central Blantyre. Minibuses and shared taxis shuttle between the two constantly throughout the day.
