Area 43

Area 43 is Lilongwe's closest equivalent to an expat and middle-class dining and shopping district, located between the Old Town and the Capital Hill. It has the highest concentration of restaurants, supermarkets, pharmacies, and international NGO offices in the city, and is where most visitors on a short stay tend to base themselves.

The area is walkable in daylight and has a more lived-in feel than Capital Hill. A cluster of restaurants along the main strip ranges from decent Indian food to pizza and grilled meat. The Shoprite supermarket here is well stocked by regional standards. If you need to sort logistics — cash, phone SIM, onward transport booking — Area 43 is the most efficient base of operations.
