St Peter's Cathedral

The Roman Catholic cathedral of the Diocese of Mzuzu, the city's most prominent building

St Peter's Cathedral sits on a rise on the east side of the city centre and is visible from most of Mzuzu. The Diocese of Mzuzu was carved out of the Diocese of Lilongwe in 1961 and St Peter's became its cathedral church in the same decade — a tall, pale-walled modern building with a free-standing bell tower and a long pitched roof clad in red tin.

The interior is calm and uncluttered: open trusses, plain wooden pews, and stained-glass windows by local artists depicting biblical scenes in distinctly African settings. Sunday Mass (in English at 7am, in Chitumbuka at 9am) is a good place to hear Malawian choral singing, which is genuinely extraordinary even in a country famous for its choirs. Visitors are welcome; dress modestly and arrive on time as the place fills up.
