Nkhata Bay's drinking scene is small and lodge-based, but the better cove-side bars have unbeatable lake views and a steady, easy traveller atmosphere. Most lodges welcome non-residents at their bars. Expect Carlsberg (brewed locally under licence and the only mainstream lager in Malawi), occasional Kuche Kuche or Castle, and a small range of South African wines at a price.
