Kayaking the Bay

The series of coves and headlands that make up Nkhata Bay are well suited to kayaking. Several lodges rent single and double sit-on-top kayaks by the hour or the day, and the water is calm enough most mornings that even inexperienced paddlers can handle it. A typical half-day trip works its way from the main bay around two or three headlands, with stops on small sandy beaches that are only accessible from the water.

Multi-day kayak trips are also possible — most often a three-to-five-day paddle north to Ruarwe or south to Chintheche, camping on the beach at fishing villages along the way. Local operators provide guides, kayaks, and food. The water is at its calmest from May to October; afternoon winds can pick up sharply in the dry season, so plan to be back in the bay by lunchtime.
