Dogon Country is all about hiking the escarpment. The villages strung along the cliff face are the attraction, and you reach them on foot with a local guide. Treks range from a few hours to over a week, depending on how deep you want to go.
One-day hike -- Start in Sanga. Three loop routes leave from the village: the Petit Tour (7 km), Moyen Tour (10 km), and Grand Tour (15 km). All give you a taste of the escarpment villages and can be done comfortably in a day.
Two-day hike -- From Bandiagara, hike down the escarpment to spend the night in Kani Kombole, Teli, or Ende. Sleeping in a village gives you a completely different experience from a day trip. The basic guesthouses are simple but welcoming.
Longer hikes -- Multi-day treks from Bandiagara or Sanga typically head south through Teli and then north, overnighting in Yawa or Douro before looping back. You can also do a full north-to-south traverse, starting in Sanga and finishing in Bandiagara or Bankas. Allow four to eight days for these longer routes.
