Terjit Oasis (Day Trip)

The Terjit oasis, about 45km south of Atar, is one of the most beautiful spots in Mauritania. Spring-fed pools lie at the bottom of a narrow palm-lined gorge cut into the Adrar plateau. The combination of cool fresh water, dense palm shade, and red rock walls is startling in the middle of the Sahara.

The drive from Atar involves a descent off the plateau on a rough piste (the last section requires 4WD and a local driver who knows the route). On arrival you can swim in the pools, walk along the gorge, and spend a few hours in the shade. A small camp near the springs offers basic meals and the possibility of sleeping overnight in a tent. If you are based in Atar for more than one night, Terjit is the single best half-day excursion.

A story
The spring water at Terjit wells up at the foot of the cliff face at a constant temperature regardless of season — cool enough to swim in during summer, warm enough in winter to seem almost heated. Local legend holds that the springs are the tears of a Berber saint who wept for the desert.
