Kaedi's main market reflects the mixed character of the town: Arab-Berber traders from the north, Halpulaar farmers from the river valley, and cross-border commerce with Senegal visible in the mix of goods on sale. The market is busiest on market days and in the mornings, when produce from the surrounding villages arrives.
You will find millet, sorghum, dried fish from the river, livestock, and the everyday goods that circulate through this corner of the Sahel. The market is a good place to observe the ethnic complexity of the area — Toucouleur, Beidane, and Haratine traders all have their sections — and to find onward transport or stock up before continuing south.
