Getting Around

Bus

Buses are the cheapest way to travel and cover most of the island. Fares are low — typically Rs 20–40 depending on distance. Port Louis and Curepipe are the main hubs; almost all routes connect through one or the other. Buses run from around 5:30am to 8pm on main routes, less frequently in the evening and to remote areas. They can be slow and crowded during rush hours but are reliable enough for getting between major towns and beaches.

Metro Express

A light rail line runs between Port Louis and Curepipe via Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes, and Vacoas. It's fast, air-conditioned, and cheap. You'll need an MECard (a prepaid smart card) to ride — available at stations. The Metro Express is the most comfortable public transport option on the island and well worth using if your route covers the central corridor.

Taxi

Taxis are plentiful but have no meters. Always agree on a fare before getting in. A journey from the airport to Grand Baie costs around Rs 1,500–2,000. Within Port Louis, short hops run Rs 150–300. Apps including Yugo and MauriRide offer fixed pricing and are a good way to avoid haggling.

Car Rental

Renting a car gives you the most freedom. Rates start at around Rs 1,200–2,000 per day for a basic manual. All major agencies are at the airport; local operators in tourist areas tend to be cheaper. Driving is on the left. An international driving licence is required, and most agencies will not rent to drivers under 23. Roads in the central highlands and south are narrow; the main coastal roads are generally good. Traffic around Port Louis during rush hour is severe.

Air and Sea to Rodrigues

Air Mauritius flies to Rodrigues daily (approximately 1 hour 30 minutes) from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Airport. The MV Mauritius Trochetia operates a passenger ferry service two to three times per month (roughly 36 hours each way).
