The Monday market in Mahébourg is one of the most authentic and lively on the island — less tourist-oriented than the Port Louis central market, and frequented mainly by locals from the surrounding villages and countryside. Stalls sell fresh vegetables, tropical fruit, spices, street food, and handicrafts in relaxed abundance.
It is a good place to buy fresh chutneys, pickles, and the dried chillies and spices used in Creole cooking. The surrounding streets fill up on market day with additional vendors selling everything from clothes to household goods. Monday mornings are the best time to visit.
