Corps de Garde Mountain

Dramatic 720-metre volcanic mountain with panoramic views over the central plateau

Corps de Garde is a 720-metre volcanic peak a few kilometres southwest of Rose-Hill, its jagged silhouette visible from much of the central plateau. The name — "guardhouse" in French — refers to its use as a lookout post during the colonial period. The summit offers one of the best panoramic views in Mauritius: on clear days you can see the coast in several directions, the sugar cane fields of the Plaines Wilhems district, and the spine of the Black River Gorges beyond.

The hike to the top takes around two hours return and is not particularly difficult, though the final section involves some scrambling. The trail starts from the village of Palma, accessible by bus from Rose-Hill in about 20 minutes. Go in the early morning for the best light and before the heat of the day; cloud often settles on the summit by mid-afternoon. Take water and wear shoes with grip.
