Rose-Hill

Central plateau town merged with Beau Bassin, serving as a Mauritian residential and commercial centre.

Rose-Hill is one of the larger towns in the central plateau, merging with Beau Bassin to form a significant urban area. It's primarily a residential and commercial centre for Mauritians rather than a tourist destination, but it has a few worthwhile stops and makes a good budget base for exploring the island interior.

The Plaza Theatre is the island's main cultural venue for drama, music, and film — checking what's on gives a good window into Mauritius's genuinely multicultural performing arts scene. A short distance away, the Chateau de Reduit — the presidential residence — has botanical gardens open at weekends, with ancient trees including tambalacoque specimens and views over the plateau. For outdoor activity, Corps de Garde mountain a few kilometres to the southwest offers a two-hour hike and some of the best panoramic views on the island. The town is well connected by bus to Port Louis and Curepipe.
