Rochester Falls

Flat-topped waterfall over hexagonal basalt columns in a sugar cane valley

A short walk through sugar cane fields brings you to one of the more geologically interesting spots on the island. Rochester Falls is not especially tall — perhaps 10 metres — but the rock over which it falls is formed of hexagonal basalt columns, a pattern created by the rapid cooling of ancient lava flows. The flat-topped edge and the geometric columns make it look unlike any other waterfall you are likely to have seen.

The path from the car park is about 15 minutes through cane fields, well-marked and easy. There is no admission charge, though local guides will offer to take you there for a small fee. Arrive early to avoid the tour groups. The combination of the waterfall, the red volcanic soil, and the cane makes it a good photography stop on any south coast circuit.
