Souillac

South-coast Mauritian town near wave-battered basalt cliffs, Gris-Gris beach, and Rochester Falls.

Souillac is a small town on the south coast, one of the rougher and more dramatic parts of the island. The sea here is exposed and often stormy — not ideal for swimming but striking to look at. Gris-Gris beach nearby has towering black basalt cliffs that get battered by waves; it's one of the most atmospheric spots on the island.

Rochester Falls, a few kilometres inland, is a flat-topped waterfall where the river cascades over distinctive hexagonal basalt columns — unusual-looking and accessible by a short walk through sugar cane fields. The nearby Telfair Gardens are peaceful and free.

Things to Do

Souillac's attractions are natural rather than cultural — a dramatic coastline of volcanic rock, a waterfall accessible through sugar cane fields, and peaceful gardens. None of them require more than a half day, which makes Souillac a natural stop on a circuit of the south coast rather than a destination in itself. The combination of Gris-Gris cliffs, Rochester Falls, and the Telfair Gardens makes a satisfying morning.
