A small public garden at the heart of Souillac, laid out in the colonial era and named after Charles Telfair, a nineteenth-century Irish botanist who worked on the island and contributed significantly to the study of its flora. The gardens are modest in scope but genuinely pleasant — shaded, well-maintained, and free — with mature trees, a fountain, and benches that local residents actually use.
They make a good starting or ending point for a Souillac visit, and are close to the town's small market. The combination of Telfair Gardens, the nearby Gris-Gris cliffs, and Rochester Falls a few kilometres inland gives the area enough substance for a half day.
