Mauritius's south-coast Tamil community built this temple to the goddess Kali — Kalimata — and it remains an active place of worship, particularly during festival days. The brightly painted gopuram (entrance tower) above the village is the most visible landmark of Surinam from a distance.
Visitors are welcome outside ceremony times; remove shoes at the gate, and ask permission before taking photographs of statues or worshippers. Cavadee processions in January and February pass through the temple grounds and are the most striking time to be in the area.
