Surinam

South Mauritius village near Souillac, close to basalt waterfalls, quiet beaches, and exposed coastal cliffs.

Surinam is a village in the far south of Mauritius, just east of Souillac on the other side of the Savanne River estuary. It's a quiet, largely residential community with a Sunday market and some local cafes.

The surrounding area has a few worthwhile natural attractions: Rochester Falls, where the river drops over distinctive hexagonal basalt columns; Riambel public beach, one of the quieter and less-visited beaches on the south coast; and the Kalimata Hindu temple. The south coast here is exposed and dramatic rather than calm and lagoon-like.
