The Azrou Rock

The Azrou Rock is a black basalt outcrop in the middle of the town, the natural feature that gave the settlement its name and around which the old quarter grew up. From the central square, a short walk between the houses brings you to a footpath that climbs the side of the rock.

The summit is unremarkable in itself, but the view is the best in town: green-tiled roofs spreading out in every direction, the green-and-white minarets of the medina mosques, and the wooded ridges of the Middle Atlas rising behind. Locals come up to watch the sunset. The descent passes a handful of small shops selling rugs and silverware made in town.

A story
The town takes its name — "rock" in Berber — from this volcanic outcrop rising out of the centre of the old quarter. It is unsigned and easy to miss between the houses, but you can scramble to the top in a few minutes for a free panorama over the green roofs and the cedar-covered hills beyond.
