The Colline des Oiseaux — "Hill of Birds" — is Laayoune's landscaped municipal park, built on a low rise in the upper town. The garden is unexpectedly green for a city on the edge of the Sahara: irrigated palms, bougainvillea, and a small zoo of exotic birds (parakeets, doves, occasionally a peacock) in cages fitted with sliding shutters that close to protect the birds from the sandstorms.
It is a popular family promenade in the cool of the late afternoon. The view from the top of the hill down towards the Saguia el-Hamra is one of the better in town.
