The countryside around Figuig is dramatic and almost entirely empty of other tourists. To the south and east, hammada (rocky desert plateau) extends toward the Algerian border. The surrounding mountains — part of the Atlas foothills — can be explored on foot in half-day or full-day circuits from the oasis.
Bring water, a hat, and sun protection — the combination of desert sun and reflected heat from the rock is fierce. There are no marked trails, so taking a local guide (easily arranged through your accommodation) for the first excursion makes sense. The early morning and late afternoon are the best times; midday is not the moment to be on exposed ground. The geological diversity — red sandstone, black volcanic rock, white limestone — makes the landscape constantly interesting.
