Palm Oasis

Morocco's largest date palm oasis, with over 200,000 trees and ancient irrigation channels

The oasis that surrounds and separates Figuig's ksour is the largest date palm grove in Morocco, with over 200,000 trees covering several square kilometres. Walking through it is a genuine pleasure — the dense canopy drops the temperature by several degrees, and the sound of running water from the irrigation channels is constant.

The best approach is to wander the paths between the palm trees in the late afternoon, when the light filters golden through the fronds. You will encounter local farmers working the gardens, donkeys carrying produce, and the intricately branching channels that have been directing water through this oasis for centuries. The Medjool and Mejhoul date varieties grown here are excellent, and buying a bag direct from a farmer is easy to arrange.

A story
Figuig's water comes from underground springs that emerge naturally in several places within the oasis, channelled since medieval times through a network of seguias (irrigation channels). The system was maintained communally, with water rights allocated by a complex schedule worked out over generations. The same schedule, barely modified, is still in use today.
