Zenaga Ksar

Oldest and most imposing of Figuig's fortified villages, with a panoramic viewpoint

Zenaga is the oldest of Figuig's seven ksour and the best place to begin exploring the town. Its high earthen walls and watchtowers are in good condition, and a platform above the main gate gives a commanding view over the whole oasis — the sea of date palms below, the surrounding mountains, and (on clear days) the Algerian desert beyond.

The interior is a labyrinth of narrow alleys, arched passageways and earthen houses built close together to provide shade. Some are inhabited; others are gradually falling back into the earth. Walking through without a guide is easy enough — get lost, then find your way back by heading toward the sound of water in the irrigation channels.

A story
The platform above Zenaga has been used as a lookout for centuries — from here, defenders could see enemies approaching across the desert long before they reached the walls. In the 19th century, the ksour of Figuig fought each other from these platforms, launching raids across the intervening palm gardens.
