Lake Isli

Isli, the "Lake of the Bridegroom", is about 10 kilometres south-east of Imilchil at 2,260 metres. Bigger and far deeper than Tislit, it is set in a stark amphitheatre of dark hills and feels much more remote. The drive in passes pastures dotted with black goat-hair tents in summer, when nomadic families bring their flocks up to graze.

A rough track leads to the shore; in a normal car you may want to walk the last kilometre. There is no village, no shop, no signage — just water, sky, and the wind. Combine the two lakes with the Imilchil market day or the moussem for a memorable two- or three-day loop.

A story
Isli is the bigger and deeper of the two lakes — depths of more than 90 metres have been measured — and local people believed for a long time that it was bottomless. In 2006, a small ferrous meteorite fragment was found nearby that some Berber storytellers link to the lovers' story.
