Saturday Souk

Saturday is the day to be in Imilchil. From early morning, Berber families come in from villages across the plateau by mule, lorry, and Renault 4 to trade livestock, wool, grain, vegetables, blankets, and household goods. The animal market on the edge of town is the most interesting part — sheep, goats, and the occasional mule changing hands with much hand-shaking and tea.

The souk is also the easiest place to find onward transport, since lorries park up here on market day and head back to villages all over the region in the afternoon. There is little for tourists to buy here — this is a working market — but it is the best window into everyday life in the High Atlas.
