Arset el Bil Garden

Hidden medina garden of old olive trees and orange groves, open to the public

Arset el Bil is a walled garden in the northern medina that few visitors find — a remnant of the market gardens (arsats) that once grew food for the city within the walls. The garden is planted with mature olive trees, orange groves, and rose hedges, and is maintained as a public park.

The garden offers a rare quiet space within the medina proper — unlike the Cyber Park (which is on the edge), Arset el Bil is surrounded by the old city walls and residential lanes. Sitting under the olives at midday, with the sound of the city muffled by the walls and the smell of orange blossom in season, gives a sense of what the medina's interior must have looked like before the gardens were progressively built over. The garden is usually empty on weekday mornings.
