A ruined 16th-century palace built by the Saadian sultan Ahmad al-Mansur, once described as "the incomparable palace" and stripped of its treasures by the Alaouite sultan Moulay Ismail two centuries later. The sprawling sunken courtyard, marble pools, and stork nests on the ramparts give a vivid sense of former grandeur. The palace also houses the 12th-century minbar from the Koutoubia mosque — an extraordinary carved pulpit of cedar, ebony, and ivory. More walking involved than you'd expect to see the whole site.
