Ben Youssef Madrasa

This 14th-century Islamic college is the most elaborately decorated monument in Marrakesh. The courtyard, with its central ablution pool and walls covered in carved stucco, cedar wood, and zellige tilework, rivals anything in the Alhambra. At its peak, 900 students lived in the tiny upstairs cells — peek into a few to appreciate the contrast between the austere living quarters and the extravagant communal spaces below.
