Saadian Tombs

16th-century royal necropolis sealed for two centuries, decorated in carved cedar and zellige tilework

The royal necropolis of the Saadian sultans, dating from the 16th century and sealed off for centuries before being rediscovered in 1917. The elaborately decorated chambers — carved cedar, painted plasterwork, zellige tilework — contain the tombs of Ahmad al-Mansur and his family. The garden setting is tranquil and the craftsmanship exceptional. Access is through a narrow passage to avoid entering the adjacent mosque.
