Mellah Souks and Market

The Mellah market is one of the less touristed corners of the Marrakesh Medina — a working neighbourhood market that serves the residential quarter around the old Jewish quarter. The covered lanes here are narrower and darker than the main souks, and the goods on offer tend towards the practical: fabrics, second-hand goods, household items, and the specialist food stalls that supply both local households and the restaurants of the nearby Bahia Palace area.

The gold souk — traditionally associated with the Mellah, where Jewish craftsmen worked in precious metals — survives in a modified form, with shops selling jewellery and metalwork clustered in the lanes near the old synagogue. Unlike the main souks, this area has a relatively low density of tourist-oriented sellers, and browsing here feels more like actual shopping than performance.
