Marrakesh Theatre Royal

The Théâtre Royal of Marrakesh is a striking piece of contemporary Moroccan architecture designed by Charles Boccara — a large performing arts complex in the Hivernage district with a distinctive roofline that draws on both Islamic architecture and modern theatre design. The building was completed in 2001 and is the main formal performance venue for the city.

The theatre hosts the Marrakesh International Film Festival (which runs in late November/early December), occasional opera and classical music performances, and theatrical productions throughout the year. The architecture is worth seeing even without a performance — the building's relationship to its gardens and the Hivernage streetscape is thoughtfully handled. Checking the programme through the city's official cultural calendar is worthwhile if your visit coincides with the theatre season.
