Merzouga has a large fleet of quad bikes and 4WD vehicles available for hire, and the flat stony hammada and the dune fringes are well-suited to both. A one-hour quad circuit around the base of the dunes costs around 200–300 MAD per person; longer half-day trips to Dayet Srji, the nomadic camps to the north, or the Algerian border area run 400–600 MAD and cover far more ground.
The 4WD trips — usually in modified Land Rovers or Toyota Land Cruisers — can reach the fossil quarries near Erfoud, the palmeries and kasbahs along the old caravan routes, and the more remote corners of Erg Chebbi that would take a full day on camel. For travelers short on time who still want to see the desert interior, this is the practical option.
Operators are concentrated along the main strip through Merzouga. Prices are negotiable, especially off-season (June to August, when Merzouga is very quiet due to heat). Make sure the quad is insured and that helmets are included — ask before agreeing.
