Marchica Lagoon

Marchica Lagoon is Nador's real landmark: a wide, shallow sweep of water between the city and the Mediterranean. Fishing boats work the edges, birds gather on the flats, and the light can be superb at the end of the day when the Rif hills turn blue behind the water.

Development around the lagoon is changing the feel of the place, especially near Atalayoun, but it is still the best reason to slow down in Nador. Come for a walk along the shore, a taxi ride around the viewpoints, or a quiet hour watching the water rather than treating the city as only a transit stop.

A story
Marchica is also known as Sebkha Bou Areg, a reminder that this was a saltwater wetland long before resort planners discovered it. The lagoon is separated from the Mediterranean by a narrow sandbar, so it feels like an inland sea sitting just behind the coast.
